Produced by voluntary group thinkARK and creative agency yello brick, and held in the Wales Millenium Centre, Cardiff, the festival is two days of talks and games that dare you to playfully reclaim learning, living and working; both now and in the future.
Ahead of playARK is the associated play:DO Hack Week...
'...a focused week of doing, that will bring together nine individuals from different disciplines to develop unique ideas that explore the theme of RECLAIMED. The aim of the week is to create a playful and socially aware experience that utilises creative technology and reclaims traditional approaches to how we live and work within our cities.'
Why RECLAIMED? Because over the last five years thinkARK have been responding to social issues within Cardiff, and their projects have found a sense and a need for us to reclaim aspects of our lives.
'How might we reclaim our urban spaces, or our education systems, how might we reclaim oral storytelling and encourage positive social engagement?'
Well how about with play?
'Play is a common language which breaks down barriers and makes connections. It can change perspectives and encourage positive social behaviour, as it allows people to become active rather than passive.'
This is the approach that the Hack Week will explore. Pretty cool, huh?
I applied several weeks ago to be one of the lucky nine individuals involved; and, rather wonderfully, I was selected :)
The week starts next Monday, and I'm really looking forward to meeting my fellow cohorts and seeing what we can come up with. I'll be documenting our process and learnings throughout the week, both on my blog/Facebook and also the thinkARK website, so you can follow our goings on if you like. Or better still, come to the playARK festival! We'll be sharing a prototype project at the talks (Friday 1st) and running it as an event on the games day (Saturday 2nd).
If you get there, give me a shout!
