The prognosis was poor, with the bone liable to snap at any moment; and with the recent rapid increase in his pain, coupled with the stress he would feel around any further injections, I made the heartbreaking decision that we would not wake Zig from the sleep he was in, and instead would lay him to rest.
I stayed with him throughout, and we buried his beautiful body in the garden late yesterday afternoon. Nori made a heart for the grave from clay that we found in the ground; and we planted a host of bulbs all around it - tulips, crocuses and daffodils - so that come the spring they will bloom and grace his favourite sunbathing spot with their colour and life.
It's been wonderful to know this dog and a privilege to have his trust. He was dearly loved and will be deeply missed.
Dream like the wind, Zig... x
