10 of the BEST comics and graphic artists from around the world were kind enough to agree to contribute to my graphic novel HOAX Psychosis Blues.
They are Hannah Berry, Karrie Fransman, Leonard M. Giron, Julian Hanshaw, Rozi Hathaway, Rian Hughes, Rhiana Jade, Ian Jones, Mark Stafford, Bryan Talbot.
All of these wonderful people sent in wonderful artwork. And in recent months, designer Wayne and I have been knitting together these separate visual pieces into one coherent piece of storytelling.
The process was quite long and very complex. We went right to the wire with regards to the printer deadline, even though this was certainly no ‘last minute affair’. In fact Wayne and I started work on this last September, and have been at it pretty steadily since then.
There are lots of reasons why this has been a complex project:
that we were trying to achieve a sort of minimalism whilst simultaneously marrying the richest of varied styles;
that we were trying to work financial miracles to ensure a gorgeous book within budget;
that we were trying to tell a story about a man more than about his illness;
The measure of Psychosis Blue’s success, however, will not be its complexity, but how effortlessly it flows in the hands of the reader.
So far only a few have seen the full and finished article. Even the illustrators have only seen their own sections, and are probably wondering how on earth everything ties together?! But tie together it does. And we are very proud of our achievement.
I’m going to post a little detail from each illustrator’s section between now and ‘pre-order time’ in May; and I hope that they whet your appetite. First up is Hannah Berry, with a detail from ‘Four Seasons’.
