Since getting the green light on HOAX funding from Arts Council England, the project’s roared into fifth gear. Not that it had ever stopped moving forwards – it was always running in the background as we waited to hear – but now it’s flying again.
This week sees HOAX My Lonely Heart director Benji Reid and composer Minute Taker working together in Manchester Artistic Research Studios to further develop the score for this ‘unapologetically raw’ musical stage performance. We can look forward to a forthcoming guest post from Minute Taker, letting us know how they got on.
Meanwhile I’m still busy with the graphic novel side of things in the shape of HOAX Psychosis Blues – and not just the book’s contents, but also the print run and distribution aspects. More on both of these soon, but for now I’d like to publicly thank the extraordinarily kind Marion Akehurst, Manager at Blackwell’s at Wellcome Collection.
Well, the first edition of HOAX Psychosis Blues is being published via Very Cross Media (www.verycrossmedia.com), an alternative, sustainable working model that seeks to create high quality artefacts with charitable aims. In the case of HOAX Psychosis Blues those aims relate to mental health charities.
In order to be able to give a percentage of your sales to charity, however, you need a certain financial model in place. And when you try to marry this model with the financial requirements of booksellers – that's when things get a little more tricky.
Enter Marion Akehurst. Having been introduced to her by ‘The Bad Doctor’ Ian Williams, I approached Marion about this very issue. Not only did she take time out of her busy day to sit and chat with me, she also actively sought workable solutions and possibilities. Open, transparent and honest, Marion’s conversation was wholeheartedly generous and hugely valuable.
When people like Marion give their time and expertise freely, what they’re actually giving is independent creative ventures like Very Cross Media a chance to get off the ground.
So to Marion Akehurst, on behalf of independent creatives everywhere, a very sincere thank you.
