Thus my relationship with Cape was born. Admittedly it was a little one-sided for awhile, as I quietly stalked them, filling my shelves with their beautiful wares whilst working on a number of my own ideas. Until one day I had a finished script before me along with the absolute and certain knowledge that this was the one.
It was the script for The Tale of Brin & Bent and Minno Marylebone, based on a short story I'd written several years before.
I started to look around Manchester for an illustrator. I can't remember how many websites I clicked on or portfolios I looked through, because the moment I found Andy Hixon's site all other potentials evaporated from my mind. Andy was the perfect fit. I knew it. He knew it. Everyone who reads the book will know it. Some things are just meant to be....
I took the proposal to Alice, my agent. Alice took it to Dan Franklin, Cape's senior editor. Dan loved it, we had a meeting, the Elegant Hound leaned on Dan's leg - and my relationship with Jonathan Cape became mutual.
